EMV

EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard and Visa and is the global standard for smart card payments. EMV cards have an integrated chip inside the card that is more secure than the magnetic stripe that is common on today’s cards and is much harder to duplicate and use fraudulently.

A majority of the world including Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin America has adopted EMV which has drastically reduced card fraud at the point of sale. The US is rapidly transitioning over to EMV and the date that has been set by the card brands (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover) for the liability shift is October 1, 2015.

Businesses that don’t comply with EMV requirements or that choose not to convert to EMV enabled devices will assume liability on fraudulent transactions and will no longer get protections from the card brands that they are afforded today. In order to avoid having to upgrade again in the near future, it is important to make sure your next device is capable of accepting both contact and contactless EMV transactions.

All Genius devices are EMV ready and compliant. These devices are EMV Level 1 and 2 certified for contact and contactless EMV transactions and businesses that utilize Genius devices will comply with all upcoming EMV mandates and requirements.
